ACTIVITIES TO WORK THE PROPERTIES OF TECHNICAL MATERIALS: CLASIFICATION, DEFINITION, IDENTIFICACION AND EXPERIENCIES.

Course 2º ESO
Time APPROXIMATELY 7 CLASSES

Learning outcomes

To know and classify the different properties of technical materials and distinguish them in common objects. To value the importance of these ones in order to choose the best material for a concrete application.

Subject Content

Classification and meaning of the most important properties of technical materials.

The use of techical materials according to their properties.

Mechanical stress: traction, compression, etc.

Calcutation of densities.

Evaluation (criteria and instruments)

To find out the properties of a material which have determined its choice to make a concrete te

Oral and writing test

To find out the properties of a material which have determined its choice to make a concrete technical object.

Oral and writing test

Demostration through simple experiencies the effects caused by differents stresses.

To record and edit a short video showing the process and telling the conclusions

Weight and volume measuring and density calculation in order to decide if this material would float or sink in water and to prove practically if it is true.

To record and edit a short video showing the process and telling the conclusions

Appropriate level of fluency in writing and speech using a specific vocabulary. Computing skills.

Oral exposition / presentation

Appropriate level of fluency in writing using a specific vocabulary. Computing skills.

To develop a concept map on a text file, after that to export it to Pdf file

Appropriate level of fluency in writing using a specific vocabulary

Contextual (cultural) element

Our school is placed in a rural little village where the most of families live of the natural resources: farming and livestock. The knownledge of traditional materials related to farming, their properties and former uses could be a good start to introduce this unit.

Cognitive processes

(thinking)

Observation, analysis, synthesis, memorization of new concepts and vocabulary, learning through using new concepts, Sharing new concepts.

Tasks

The cork: to take photos and details about this local production process during a guided visit to a nearby factory.

To prepare a presentation about the previous visit, telling about the cork, its production and properties.

Oral presentation about the cork.

Simple experiments about the density and other material properties.

To record and edit video about previous experiments.

To publish video on the Internet (youtube, blogs, social networks, etc.).

To use a text editor to develop concept maps.

Activities

Introduction

Questionnaire to evaluate previous knowledge.
